This week’s ThrowbackThursday shows one of the racing cars that Beck & Pollitzer transported for the 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally.
The race was the first of two World Cup Rallies and began at Wembley Stadium, London, on 19th April, finishing 38 days later in Mexico City on the 27th May. The competing drivers covered 16,000 miles, travelling through Europe and South America.
The pictured car belonged to a team of drivers: Norman Baguley, Allan Stanforth and John Varley. Although our research suggests that the trio were amateur racers, as they are not included on the list of professional competitors, their daring and determination is admirable! In the end, the gruelling competition was won by Hannu Mikkota and Gunnar Palm, who was driving a Ford Escort.
