Nurses and Nurseries

Recent events have highlighted how important doctors, nurses and other caregivers are to our society. This week’s ThrowbackThursday is a show of appreciation to those essential workers, and depicts a Beck & Pollitzer exhibition stand from the early 1900s, advertising the ‘National Society of Day Nurseries’.

The National Society of Day Nurseries was an organisation of medically-trained professionals who cared for babies and infants during the late Victorian and early Edwardian era. The president of the organisation was Queen Victoria’s fifth child, Princess Helena (known as Princess Christian after her marriage in 1866).

This organisation was one of Her Royal Highness’ passions, most of which centred on the area of nursing. In addition to the National Society of Day Nurseries, she served as President of the Royal British Nurses Association and was one of the founding members of the British Red Cross.
